Hypnosis - The Truth Behind All The Myths

By Adam Cox

Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. Some consider them to be some sort of magic while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Some of the popular misconceptions associated with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.

Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very easy to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. Even people who have seen hypnosis on others often refuse to believe in it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are somehow weak mentally. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Even people with strong will power can fall under the charms of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up without reason is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. An individual under hypnosis does not get segregated from the external world, but stays completely aware of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is therefore able to concentrate fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.

Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the human population, and this is another prevalent myth. Although, the finding has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists made use of the same hypnosis procedure for everyone. Hypnosis can't be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different approaches for different personality styles.

Meditation and hypnosis are often confused with each other. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and usually has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not correct. Trance is again a mental state devoid of any communication, on the other hand communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis method.

Another myth is that bodily and behavioural alterations in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis certainly cannot transform the body in unnatural ways. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive habits like overeating and chain smoking, and by heightening one's inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about important physical alterations in a person and ensure a healthier body.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a happy and satisfying life, and therefore one should not pay attention to the myths, and go for hypnotic sessions with an open mind.
