By Trevor Johnson

Meditation helps one overcome stress and attain peace of mind and the correct. It makes one positive and helps a person find his or her spiritual self. There are many techniques how to meditate and find relaxation.

In the 20th century, many New Age meditative techniques made their appearances. People starting adopting these in place the older existing systems. But broadly, these techniques can be said to be either Zen or Hinduism based. The latter is also called concentrative meditation. It cannot be said that as to which technique is the best for someone. What works for one might not work for another person.

A derivative of this form of meditation is the Transcendental Meditation or yoga nidra, made popular by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during the'60`s. This form teaches one to detach the mind completely from his or her surroundings. Concentrating on the breathing process is a good way of starting this meditation. Soon the mind enters a tranquil and aware state. This increases self-awareness and induces a sense of inner peace.

In the Transcendental type of meditation, one is required to sit quietly and focus on breathing. Slowly, one starts breathing slowly and deeply. Also, the continuous focus on inhalation and exhalation makes the mind tranquil and aware. The practitioner retreats within the inner-self and is unaware of the outside world.

In Zen based meditation, one is expected to be conscious of everything in their vicinity. The practitioner has to sit in a quiet place and consciously observe thoughts, situations, memories, images or worries and so on. Sensations sounds and smells are experienced here without any emotional involvement. A person gains clarity and becomes calm. France's Thich Nhat Hanh`s vipassana, a Zen based technique, teaches a person to concentrate on the present. One is taught to do this by observing the breath and the sensations in the body. This helps one attain perfect concentration, blocking out outside distractions.
